Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award
On Thursday 17th May Miss Wyatt had to privilege to be invited by the Duke of Edinburgh Award, as a special guest, to attend a Gold DofE presentation. This presentation was held at Buckingham Palace within the gardens.
It was a beautiful, sunny day which made the setting even more exciting! Four ex- students were being presented with their award; Ben Prangley, Sam Prangley, Carys Lilley and Dan Hole. All four of these students did their bronze, silver and gold awards through Honiton Community College and attended sixth form.
It was a magically day firstly because we got to go in through the front gates of the palace where tourists were squeezing their hands through their bars to get a photo of the palace without railings in! There were 36 groups of gold award holders with approximately 25 young people per group. Each young person had a guest with them. In addition there were special guests, like myself, who lead DofE all over the county.
Each group had a guest speaker who was a celebrity, charity lead or sports person for example Mary Berry, Carole Kirkwood or Tom from McFly. Our group had David Carr, a GB sailor who sails in Ben Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR America's Cup team. He was extremely inspirational talking about his goals and how success isn’t always a good thing when you are aiming to achieve something.
Finally Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex came to the group to have a chat with the young people and then the adults. Asking questions about everyone's DofE. Getting your Gold DofE is a huge achievement in its own and getting to visit Buckingham Palace is a small reward for the time, effort and commitment all the young people have put in.
Well done for all the HCC student past and present who have achieved any of their DofE awards.
